BUSHIDO, CAGLIARI

2018

The planned intervention is located between the port area of Cagliari and its coastline, at the foot of the Bonaria hill.

The Bushido project is therefore set in a situation of extreme value and landscape and environmental charm. The building is inserted close to two main axes with a strong difference in height, between via Bottego and viale Bonaria there is about 6 meters of difference in height, the terrace of via Bottego is in fact located at the foot of the Bonaria hill and is today made up of a varied fabric in terms of construction periods and architectural style. The Bushido intervention proposes the replacement of two buildings in which a fracture point had been created in the terrace itself. In this way the project creates a mending and restores the logical constitution of the settlement typology. The building stands with the main body on the road edge of via Bottego maintaining the courtyard sheltered by the embankment above which rises the avenue that leads to the Basilica.
The intervention fits in an integrated way into the context and presents itself as an integral part of the landscape. To favor the contextualization, the same materials that characterize the surroundings are used. The building is in fact a block of limestone from whose cavities the greenery is born and grows.

The intervention lot is made up of two distinct parcels that for cadastral reasons had to remain as such, therefore the project was studied by placing two properties side by side that are self-sufficient and independent but which in fact appear as a single and homogeneous architecture.

The 4-level building above ground has a high permeability on the ground floor to ensure the insertion of greenery from the street to the rear courtyard. To respect the archaeological importance of the place, no excavation was planned, therefore the ground floor consists only of the communal areas and a winter garden protects the entrance to the building which is through an atrium configured as a cohesion between walking spaces and waiting spaces. The apartments are located on the upper floors in this way a superior intimacy is maintained and good natural lighting is guaranteed for all the apartments. The central part of the building is used for the block of stairs and bathrooms illuminated on full-height cloisters, in this way it was possible to guarantee all ten Bushido apartments a double view on via Bottego and viale Bonaria. The street front of via Bottego is characterized by a system of mobile wooden brise-soleil that protects the sleeping area of the apartments. The living area is instead directed onto wooden terraces that extend towards the courtyard from which it is possible to contemplate the Basilica of Bonaria. In this way it is possible to exploit the advantageous climatic characteristics of the city of Cagliari using shading techniques of green building and eco-sustainable architecture and at the same time enjoy the landscape and environmental quality of the intervention lot.
