30 - Espace Peacock
Espace Peacock is a multifunctional space located in the city of Cagliari, designed to host events and serve as a prime venue for creating meetings between people and developing multicultural social life. This space is designed to accommodate various types of events and individuals. Inside, there are different thematic areas, such as a conference area, a play area for children, a space dedicated to show cooking, and a comfort zone meant for relaxation and socializing, all of which can adapt and integrate business and contemporary work environments.
The interior design revolves around the idea of trees and natural, organic forms, avoiding sharp and rigid shapes in an attempt to create a warm and comfortable environment. The various areas, always in visual contact with each other through a large open space, are defined by a series of curvilinear forms, soft leaf-like walls, which, due to their shape, allow the creation of winding paths that pass through and touch them, making the space feel like a stimulating and never boring continuum.
The contrast between hard/soft refers to the intrinsic characteristics of these forms. Just as a right angle and a static form tend to repel, curved and sinuous shapes invite people and activities. Through the combination of wooden slats, revolving around the idea of plants, the pillar-trees have become the project’s icon, transforming simple rigid and immobile structural elements into something more dynamic. The light rises from the floor, highlighting the presence of the pillars, almost representing the birth of life from a primordial soup from which everything develops. This choice has transformed the presence of the pillars in the center of an open space into a defining strength of the space.
The interior environment is also characterized by a continuous contrast of colors, from the mocha color of the rigid elements that serve as a backdrop to the cream color of the curvilinear elements that define the spaces, from the warm tones of the multipurpose room to the cooler colors like white and cobalt blue in the service areas. Throughout, there’s a constant reference to nature, starting with the wooden slats covering the pillars and the show cooking area, moving on to green greenery-colored chairs and furniture, and culminating in decorative panels that engage the eye through designs and details of natural elements both near and far, thus creating a fresh and revitalizing environment that contrasts with the routine of modern life.
The entire construction process follows the idea of life and work as activities aimed at fostering social connections. For this reason, the space was designed with an exchange of information and ideas between designers, clients, and artisans, in a continuous flow of ideas and personalities that meet and clash on the construction site. From project sketches on the construction walls to the cutting and placement of wooden elements, from the construction of curvilinear forms to the choice of colors and lighting, the construction site was the beating heart of the design process. It was the main place where craftsmanship and architectural expertise came together to discuss and collaborate on the creation of a new space full of life for the city. As such, the concept of prefabrication was discarded in favor of manual labor, creating the curved forms using carefully placed bricks and wooden slats cut and positioned on-site, leaving no element to chance.
